Hidden wealth

Occasionally I am hit with how incredibly rich we are. My friend and I stopped on our way home from market last week to use a McDonald's bathroom. We didn't buy anything... we just stopped to use the facilities. And we both remarked that we are incredibly rich... as we stood there with our hands in the wonderfully hot water after a long day in the cold of Dec at market.

Right this moment, I am tearing up my carpets. There are hard wood floors underneath. It is so beautiful! I am excited and at the same time amazed that anyone would cover this up. Didn't they know how rich they were?

This time of year it is SO easy to focus on the stuff. It is so simple to try to think of what you are getting and what you want to give. It is easy to loose sight of how rich we really are.

This evening has been spent racing my very helpful teen to see how fast we can pull the amazing amount of carpet tacks out of the magically perfect wood floor underneath... watching my toddler run back and forth singing 'if you give a mouse a cookie' from the play we went to in the city this morning... waiting for my husbands paycheck to deposit in the bank... drinking tea steeped in water from our tap without worrying if it was boiled enough to kill off diseases... making squash from my garden for dinner with butter that I didn't have to milk or churn...

I feel so amazingly rich.

I was just thinking about this myself. When you think of the rest of the world, we are really, amazingly wealthy.

You are very right...how easy it is to get caught up in activities or what cool "thing" we will purchase next, but yes, if we stop for more then a moment we will discover our riches are within the walls of our own home.

Thanks for the reminder Val!

I love your blog! I think it's important to feel rich. I often joke after a big crafting session or baking session that I am "rich with felt" or "rich with chocolate". I am rich with the luxury of multiple freedoms. Including the choice to spend time with my children or work, should I want to.

I blogged on this in October,

Thanks.

Most of your followers are young which means this may not be relivent, but I have spent years using the hidden wealth in my great grandmothers estate. This means finding the sheets that my great aunt saved from her job at the laundry and making them into quilts for my grandchildren, recognizing the tools that they used and fixing them to be used in our generation rather than putting them in the land fill, restoring and recovering old furniture, fixing the house she and two more generations of her decendents had before me and enjoying the comfort of not using up anything but passing it on.

Hidden wealth is all around us, but it must be recognized as a benifit or it ends up rusted, falling apart or distroyed.
