Halloween Candy Overload

Oh yeah baby! The week of the perpetual sugar high is here!

Not if I can help it. We got over 12 pounds of candy this year! YIKES! And we didn't go very far either. The two youngers and I only made it around one full city block before turning back because Logan was melting down, but even then, they had 2# each. It was nuts! Alex of course, went with his friends and came home with 6# worth of candy all by himself.

I decided to take action this year. Yesterday evening, when they were begging for their candy for the hundredth time that day, I let them have one piece... and then I made them take out the kitchen scale and weigh out their candy and told them they could keep exactly 1/2 pound of it for themselves. I told them that it was a good time (with so much excess) to be able to give a sweet treat to our guys overseas. So we are participating in the Halloween Candy Buy Back for our troops this year. It is a great way to get a treat to our guys and give the kids a little bit of the 'spirit of giving' before the 'season of getting' comes again.

Halloween candy is great for homeschooling too! My kids have done their math problems this week with it, been sorting, counting, and trading it in their free time, and now have used a scale to measure ounces of each piece so they could get the most bang for their 1/2 lb they were allowed to keep. I think this is the start of a tradition!

Crikey, that's quite a haul! For this reason only, I'm happy that Halloween is not really celebrated in Australia. I think you've dealt with it well though.

Wow, that is a LOT! I'm laughing because we were "learning" with our candy today too. Sorting based on types, matching up duplicates and counting it all. So fun.
